Anti-Heartburn Shake

If you have heartburn, I feel for you. Whether it is because you are also knocked up or you have overindulged on queso, I am sorry. It is truly the worst thing ever. Since experiencing heartburn lots of people have given be suggestions on what to do to manage it. Here is the list and my assessment.

Tums- For minor heartburn, sure. It does not work as a preventative. You must suffer then chew 2 disgusting chews and hope for the best. Tip from me to you: DO NOT BUY THE TROPICAL FLAVOR, so gross. But, they are safe for pregnancy and help me get my calcium in which is a big pro. The cons are that I have to wait until I feel terrible. I have these in my purse, gym bag and night-side table. I would give them a 6/10 on effectiveness. Like I said it makes it feel slightly less terrible but does not solve it.

Zantac- Great! A medicine you can take prior to getting heartburn! No need to feel uncomfortable, just pop one in the morning. It is also on my OB’s list of approved medicine. But, much like the tums, it is not 100% effective. It definitely helps but not the best. I would give this a 7/10 for effectiveness.

Gaviscon- This is not a pregnancy approved medicine in the US, but it is in the UK. It is a chew that fizzes, you take it with a water chases. It works to treat but also prevent. This worked pretty damn well but I had horrible guilt that I was hurting the baby so I only took it once. If you are not preggers get this! 8/10 for effectiveness.

Baking soda and water- Add 1/4 tsp of baking soda to 8 oz of water, hold your nose and drink. It tastes of seawater. It is nasty BUT very effective. If I drink this in the AM, I am good to go all day. But yeah it is nasty. I would give this a 9/10 on effectiveness and a 2/10 for taste. Best served chilled.

Sour patch kids- I shit you not this was suggested by numerous people. Prior to heartburn this had even been a craving. But since having heartburn, not so much. So one particularly bad heartburn day my awesome husband bought me a large bag of sour patch kids. Like a family sized bag… I ate a good 50% of the bag and felt terrible. This may have been a quantity issue not a sour patch kid issue to be fair. Sooo I tried it another day and had a smaller amount and despite tasting delightful they were not very effective. I would give this a 9/10 for taste and a 2/10 for effectiveness.

Almonds- I was in need of healthy snacks that would not cause me heartburn and even better if they would help alleviate. Almonds were suggested. They definitely did not cause heartburn but they also did not help. Dark chocolate covered almonds have become my after lunch treat though now! 5/10 for effectiveness.

Pineapple- Again, in an effort to eat healthier while treating heartburn I was advised to eat pineapple. Pineapple actually caused heartburn, though tasting delicious. 0/10 for effectiveness.

Enter this shake recipe. Bananas were suggested as was ginger so hence this shake was created to solve all heartburn issues mayhaps? It is definitely tasty and filling. The ginger is a power flavor. If you do not like ginger, this is not the recipe for you.
